Literature on the business value of web 2.0 collaboration

As part of the Idea Practitioner initiative, we are looking to develop small research streams on current hot topics in management innovation.

The idea is to scan for the 5-6 relevant publications on each of these topics and produce summaries of this literature (see attached file as example of work already produced). This would allow our consultants to get up to speed very quickly and have an informed discussion with clients, without having to trawl through all the books.

Niels from the Mesh is part of the team which will be contributing to this effort. We also have people on board from France, UK and Australia.

I would like to get your thoughts on two of the hot topics we have mind, which in my view are relevant to this forum:
1. The business value of web 2.0 collaboration
2. The real world use of virtual worlds

2 Questions:
- Any thoughts / builds / adds on these two research topics
- What publications do you have in mind and would recommend for these

We ran a Web 2.0 ASE at GM and came up with a few strong examples of web 2.0 usage within the "Enterprise" the details are GM confidential but I will generically summarize as:

Web 2.0 Help / Service Desk
Web 2.0 Mashups & Widgets
Web 2.0 Mobility & HR Lookup (internal Facebook)
Web 2.0 Collaborative Environments for Emerging Markets
Web 2.0 Idea Storm
Web 2.0 Swiki (Standardized Work Description Wiki Idea)

Hope helps!!

Apart from publications I think we should scan a number of centres.
In the UK, the Serious games Institute is involved in both reserach and incubation of virtual world applications and services for instance..

Hi Clement,

I think this is an excellent idea. I would like to contribute to the Idea Practitioner initiative and help develop these small, focused research streams on relevant topics.

Neils and I are already involved in a few other initiatives, and I will be happy to add this to the mix, as contributing to “The business value of web 2.0 collaboration” is right in line with some of my existing endeavors.

Let’s get in touch and discuss how I might contribute.

Cheers,
Chad

Hi Chad,

Thanks for your reponse and desire to contribute. The more people work at it the more value we all get out of it.

Here are the topics were are currently thinking to work on

1. The business value of web 2.0 collaboration
2. The real world use of virtual worlds
3. Doing business in India
4. Information orientation (capabilities and maturity)
5. Facing the generation gap
6. User-centric designs
7. Managing change through emotional orchestration
8. Strategic agility and resilience
9. Innovation as a process
10. Does green IT matter?

We have at least 1 person in each of the following countries: FR, UK, NL and Australia. We all now need to identify a theme (in this list or not) which is relevant in that country for us at a specific moment. The process is then to develop publication summaries which synthesise and analyse the prescriptions of the 4-5 core publications in the market at the moment which treat that theme. This will hopefully allow others to either get a basic level of understanding without reading the book or give them the desire to read it.

The ppt file I attached ealier in this threat will give you an idea of what we are aiming to get (this example was done on a more 'general management' theme).

My idea is then to organise roundtables / discussion groups around each of these topics.

At the end of the day the real value is in achieving a higher return on investment collectively in our personal mastery efforts (e.g. keeping ourselves up to date on client hot topics).

BTW, are you based in the US? If you already work with Niels you could continue doing so on this or create a separate stream in your geography.

What topics would interest you? Are you able to get a team of juniors (or other) to support you on this?

Once we get the machine going we could probably do 1 topic every 1-2 months.

Cheers.

Clem.

Hi Clement,

It sounds interesting to me and would love to understand how if at all I can be part of this and contribute in any of the streams. Especially seeing one of the topics here as "Doing business in India", I feel I can at the least provide some inputs from an India perspective.

On a personal level, I would be more keen to get involved/focus in "The business value of web 2.0 collaboration" and "Facing the generation gap".

Let me know how I can contribute and be part of this initiative. Thanks for sharing!

Nikhil

Hi Nikhil,

Thanks for your interest in this work. The more minds the better and the richer the experience for all of us individually.

France has picked up the indian topic (now called the opportunities for growth and cost reduction in India) - this is lead by me (I am supported by 3 other people). I will put you in the loop when we start discussing content to get your views. In the mean time, are there any readings that you would recommend for us here in Europe to better understand the Indian market under both of these facets?

Here is the list of books I have just ordered

Regarding Web2.0: this would be treated by Holland (lead by Niels van der Zeyst). You could work with him on that.

Regarding the generation gap: this has not yet been formally selecte but there is a chance that Australia would be interested (lead by Sunainika Saigal). You could work with her on that.

Im happy to introduce both of them to you as they are looking for folks to collaborate with them.

Cheers.

Clem.

Hi Chad,

Great to hear that so many topics interest you! I'm therefore sure you will find this exercise enriching.

I called this evening but got a busy ring tone. Will try later - how about on Friday 16:00 Paris time / 09:00 Dallas time?

As I said to Nikhil, regarding Web2.0: this is treated by Holland (lead by Niels van der Zeyst). You could work with him on that - especially coz you guys know one another already.

Regarding the generation gap: this has not yet been formally selected but there is a chance that Australia would be interested (lead by Sunainika Saigal).

Regarding the strategic resilience: this is treated by the UK (lead by David Warne). Here a good book on this is Fast Strategy by professor Yves Doz from INSEAD (see attached file - presentation he did at the summer university)

You could work with either of them if you chose those topics.

Alternatively, if you are up for it and are keen to seek help from a couple other people in the US, you could probably takle the "Information orientation (capabilities and maturity)" or "Innovation as a process" topics autonomously.

We can discuss further during our call.

Cheers.

Clem.
